Blonde Haired Hottie, Amy Lance: I eat 10,000 Brussels Sprouts A Year
IT’S the festive food we love to hate — but Amy Lance happily scoffs 10,000 Brussels sprouts a year.
And as a supermarket sprout scout she eats as many as 500 A WEEK in the run-up to Christmas.
Amy, 26, hated the veg as a child, but has grown to love it so much that she even asks for an extra helping on December 25.
Her job for Waitrose is to decide which of around 25 varieties of sprout work best for the store — and also to develop completely new varieties.
Single Amy said that the main problem with sprouts is their bitterness — though their taste has improved over the years.
She explained: “For example, red sprouts look great — and very festive at Christmas. But they are naturally more bitter than green ones.
“The challenge is to find the plants that are naturally sweeter, cross breed those and you then have a sweeter crop.”
Amy is based at Waitrose’s HQ in Bracknell, Berks, but as adevelopment technologist she travels the world in search of new fruit and veg. Her favourites include a grape with an intense sweet flavour like a strawberry which has been bred in the US — and a giant 40cm Japanese spring onion called a Goku.
One potential downside to her role is obvious — wind-inducing sprouts are the reason most of us won’t have a Silent Night this Christmas. But Amy joked: “Luckily I don’t have a problem with that.
“I think that eating so many my body has got used to them.
“If you just have them at Christmas, the high dose of fibre in one go is what creates the embarrassing moments. So I don’t upset my family when eating.”
On the big day Amy will eat her sprouts with chestnuts and pancetta — a family tradition.
