NYPD shoot and kill knife wielding man smoking a reefer in Times Square – Video
I think this episode will bring to the fore yet again, whether this was a justified ‘kill’ or not as there have been mixed reviews on the action the NYPD decided to take.
So on Saturday, August 11th New York tourists got a shock when they witnessed the killing of a man by police. The gunshots resulted in pandemonium for those who heard the shots but had no idea what was happening while those watching were traumatized with the vision of a killing in broad day light.
As the story goes, a dreadlocked black dude (now identified as 51 year old Darrius Kennedy) wielding an 11 inch knife and smoking a joint was initially accosted by police in Times Square. According to some eyewitness accounts, he had slashed someone’s face and was behaving ‘erratically’.
Police show up and ask him to put down weapon but he decides to taunt police – dancing and half running down blocks till they reach 37th street on 7th Avenue.
The guy at this point lunges at one of the policemen with his knife but before he can do any harm, he is shot and killed by about 10 shots in rapid succession from the police.
Some people are of the opinion they could have shot him in the leg and gotten the knife away from him while others believe it was justified as he was a threat to the public.
What do you think?
